Alison Johns

Alison was appointed as Chief Executive of Advance HE in 2017. Previously she was the Chief Executive of the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education (LFHE), and Head of Policy for Leadership, Governance and Management at the HEFCE (The Higher Education Funding Council for England, now the Office for Students), where she established the Leadership Foundation, and the Equality Challenge Unit. Alison is past president and chair of the Association of University Administrators (AUA), advisor to the Association of Commonwealth Universities Human Resources Management Network, and also sits on the British Council’s planning committee for Going Global. She holds numerous international Board and Advisory positions, and works widely in the area of effective governance and the advancement of equality, diversity and inclusion.

Tom Welton

Tom served as Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences (2014-2019), and before that as Head of the Department of Chemistry at Imperial College (2007-2014) when it won its first Athena Swan Gold award. Pavel Ovseiko

Pavel is leading a multi-disciplinary programme of research and policy advocacy on gender equity and diversity across medical and social sciences. This includes building an evidence base to accelerate women’s advancement and leadership; exploring ways of creating a more supportive and inclusive university culture, and evaluating impact of Athena Swan gender equality action plans. He serves on his departmental Athena Swan Self-Assessment Team, the Advance HE Athena Swan Governance Committee, the UK National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Race Equality Public Action Group, and the European Association of Science Editor’s Gender Policy Committee. His personal ambition is to co-create “a science of Athena Swan” in collaboration with researchers and practitioners from the institutions and countries participating in Athena Swan.

Anne Pépin
Senior Policy Officer, Gender Sector, Unit Democracy and European values, DG Research and Innovation, European Commission, Belgium
Anne is in charge of developing gender equality policies in European research and innovation. Previously, she was heading the ‘Mission pour la place des femmes au CNRS’, the strategic unit in charge of gender equality at the French National Centre for Scientific Research. Among other responsibilities, she coordinated EU-funded projects INTEGER (2011-2015, on implementing gender equality plans) and GENDER-NET (2013-2016, a trans-national network on gender equality in the European Research Area). Since June 2017, she has been on leave from her permanent CNRS research director position to join the European Commission.

Karine Morin
Director, Policy and Interagency Affairs, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), Dimensions: Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Canada
In early 2019, Karine joined NSERC as Director, Policy and Interagency Affairs where she is responsible for the implementation of the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion initiative. She recently returned to Ottawa after being an Executive Director at Alberta Innovates, overseeing a number of initiatives related to clinical research and ethics. Previously, she has served as Genome Canada’s Director of the “GE3 LS” program, overseeing activities related to the ethical, environmental, economic, legal and social aspects of genomics research. Earlier, she was a Senior Ethics Policy Advisor at the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). She also conducted research on ethical, legal and social issues related to genomics at the University of Ottawa’s Institute of Science, Society and Policy. Karine is a graduate of McGill University School of Law; she also completed a Masters in Law at the University of Pennsylvania, and worked in the US for more than 10 years. She has broad expertise in science policy, has published widely in bioethics and law, and has taught as an adjunct at several universities in the US and Canada.

Gillian Cowell

Gillian leads the strategy for the British Council’s work on gender equality and empowering women and girls. This involves the design and delivery of programmes focused on women and girls and gender equality issues as well as providing support to gender mainstreaming on British Council, EU and Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office-funded programmes. This includes the Going Global Partnerships programme, which focuses on higher education and science. She has also commissioned and contributed to research reports and practice papers including the recently launched global report Gender in Higher Education: Maximising Impacts.

Ross Woods

Ross has led the Higher Education Authority’s work on gender equality and other areas of equality, diversity and inclusion since June 2019. This has included initiatives such as the Senior Academic Leadership Initiative, the first ever Report on Race Equality in Irish Higher Education and, more recently, work to address sexual violence and harassment in higher education institutions.

Wafa led the successful implementation of the SAGE Pilot and oversaw the expansion of SAGE and its incorporation into a not-for-profit company. Wafa has a research background in molecular biology and microbiology; she started her career in health research and then moved to government, where she held a number of senior leadership and management positions in the Australian Government. Prior to joining SAGE, Wafa worked internationally including as senior manager at the Health Authority Abu Dhabi (UAE) and as a consultant specialising in health policy, regulation and clinical e-support solutions.

Originally trained as an engineer, Laura’s research on groundwater systems closely involves international, multidisciplinary collaborations in South & Southeast Asia, South America and Sub-Saharan Africa. Darla Thompson

Darla has over a decade of experience in social, ethical, and historical analyses of STEMM education and practices. Previously, she served as faculty and senior program manager for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Health Policy Research Scholars at The George Washington University, a leadership program for doctoral students from underrepresented backgrounds and under-resourced communities. She served as a program officer in the Board on Population Health and Public Health Practice at the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine. While there, she led workshops on topics such framing the dialogue on racial and ethnicity to advance health equity, achieving health equity and well-being in rural communities, exploring equity in multisector health partnerships, and community violence as a population health issue.

Dani Glazzard

Dani has been Head of Athena Swan (UK) at Advance HE since May 2020. The Athena Swan Charter is a framework used across the globe to progress gender equality within higher education and research. Established in 2005 to encourage and recognise commitment to advancing the careers of women in STEMM, the charter is now used to address gender equality more broadly, not just barriers to progression that affect women. Dani leads a team who facilitate the charter’s peer review process in the UK and support Advance HE members to advance gender equality in their institutions.

Sarah Fink
Head of Athena Swan Ireland (Acting), Ireland
Sarah is currently Acting Head of Athena Swan Ireland at Advance HE, working on the development and delivery of the charter in Ireland. She provides advice to Athena Swan applicants, develops training and workshops, and facilitates assessment panels. She works with Irish institutions and relevant external agencies to provide guidance on issues relating to Athena Swan Ireland. Sarah has previously worked in higher education and research in Ireland and the UK. She has experience leading on EDI data collection and consultation, action plans, and assessing impact. She also has expertise in supporting sector-wide and institutional progress on gender equality.

Arun Verma

Arun is a leader in integrating intersectionality into programmes and policy and has experience leading the implementation of intersectionality in both national and global programmes. He has led the redevelopment of an entire mental health system and domestic violence system. He has led the development of global participation and intersectionality groups in the third sector. Eleanor McDavis

Eleanor joined Queen Mary, University of London in 2020 as the Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Manger with a focus on gender equality having previously worked as an EDI Officer at UCL and LSHTM, and as a Equality Charters Officer at Equality Challenge Unit. During each role she supported numerous departments in submitting successful Athena Swan applications and most recently was core team member in Queen Mary’s successful Silver Institutional Athena Swan application (result: March 2022). In 2020 Eleanor and UCL colleagues, Sara Mole and Kevin Coutinho, established the Russell Group Athena Swan Practitioners Working Group to create a space for practitioners to meet, discuss and constructively feedback on the UK’s Athena Swan Transformation. Prior to her starting her career Eleanor completed a BA in American History and Politics at the University of East Anglia (UK) and MA in Gender Studies at Utrecht University.

Claire Hann

Claire works in the Equality and Diversity Unit at the University of Oxford, leading a new project to improve communications and knowledge sharing on EDI across the University. Prior to this, she worked as an EDI Officer in the School of Geography at Oxford, helping to secure the first Athena Swan Silver award in the Social Sciences Division. Claire’s background is in research, both in academic and public policy contexts. Kevin is the UCL Athena Swan Manager. He is Chair of the Higher Education Race Action Group (HERAG), an Athena Swan and Race Equality Charter panel chair for Advance HE, a member of Advance HE’s EDI Committee and co-Chair of LERU’s Gender and EDI Policy Group. Kevin is Chair of Windsor Fellowship, a race equality charity, a Linnean Society council member, an independent member of the Royal Society of Chemistry Diversity and Inclusion Committee and an Adviser for the Faraday Institution, promoting diversity in battery technology. He was awarded The Guardian Public Service Leadership Excellence Award in 2019.

Daisy Hung

Daisy is the EDI Manager for the Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences (MPLS) Division at the University of Oxford, and has also taken on a secondment as Programme Manager for the University’s Race Equality Task Force. In MPLS, Daisy leads a team to develop the strategy and activities needed to embed equality and diversity in all that we do, and cultivate a culture of inclusion and collaboration among our departments. Daisy is from California, where she was a public interest lawyer representing domestic abuse survivors, a careers advisor for law students, and a diversity practitioner focused on diversifying the legal profession.

Emma joined Innovate UK KTN as the Head of Diversity and Inclusion in January 2022. Emma is leading the development, delivery of KTN’s D&I Plan, and oversees the delivery of Innovate UK’s programmes, Women in Innovation and Young Innovators. Emma has a breadth of experience delivering EDI strategy and impactful cultural change in higher education. David Bass

David is responsible for providing Advance HE’s organisational leadership on EDI, both internally and externally. He brings a wealth of experience working with universities and the tertiary sector, in equality and diversity, governance, access, as well as strategic planning and management. David has been central to ensuring inclusion is strongly embedded in Advance HE’s new strategy and in the development of our CEO’s Race Action Group. Louise Bryant
Professor of Psychological and Social Medicine, University of Leeds, UK
Louise serves as Deputy Dean, Equality Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in the Faculty of Medicine and Health and Dean for EDI, University of Leeds. Louise previously led Athena Swan work in the School of Medicine and led on the successful Gold charter application in 2019. Her research has focused mainly on psychosocial aspects of genetic screening and on addressing health inequalities in marginalised groups, including adults with a learning disability.

Alvin has years of experience in conducting research, carrying out monitoring & evaluation of large-scale projects, and providing technical support for organisations in the education and development sectors. He is currently leading the Wellcome/Oxford-funded project ‘What Works to Support Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in Research Careers’ aiming to build the evidence and data base to assess the effectiveness of existing EDI initiatives, assess progress against institutional EDI goals, and ensure that EDI interventions aimed at improving the career progression and experience are well-targeted and effective. Helen is a research consultant in the field of gender equality and women’s rights and a specialist adviser to public bodies on the prevention of sexual and gender based violence, in the workplace, in schools and universities, and in public spaces. The overarching theme of Charoula’s research rests upon inequalities in higher education and social justice with a particular focus on gender (in)equalities, mobility and transitions from education to employment (including transitions from doctoral training to academic careers and beyond). Nicole has chaired the School of Engineering and Innovation Athena Swan self-assessment team to a successful departmental Athena Swan Silver award in 2021. As the Equality Diversity Inclusivity and Accessibility Lead for the school, Nicole is now overseeing the implementation and the monitoring of the impact of the Athena Swan action plan. Angie completed her PhD in Cognitive Development at the University of Bristol in 2019. Since 2018, she has been working as a Teaching Associate in the department of Psychology at the University of Nottingham. She has pioneered cross-disciplinary research on research evaluation and policy, including assessing the wider impacts of research on society, and the governance of the humanities, arts, and social sciences within science systems. She has previously held research and teaching positions at The Open University; Nuffield College, Oxford University; Research School of Social Sciences, The Australian National University; and Brunel University London.

Senior Manager and Deputy to the Chief Operating Officer, NIHR Oxford Biomedical Research Centre (BRC), UK
Lorna is leading a number of initiatives on Equality Diversity and Inclusion in partnership with the University of Oxford and other key stakeholders at NIHR Oxford BRC. She has published a number of first-time research papers on gender equity in BRC settings in England. She is a trained Executive Coach and NHS mentor and runs leadership training for emerging and senior leaders affiliated to the BRC. She is a visiting academic at the Radcliffe Department of Medicine and member of Kellogg College (College advisor) and Pembroke College University of Oxford.
